The South African landscape artist transforms devastation into beauty with “Life After Fire,” inspired by the Cape’s fire-driven fynbos ecosystem.

South African landscape artist Leon Kluge has once again captured international attention at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, taking home both Gold and Best in Show for his immersive exhibition, Life After Fire.

The win marks Kluge’s third consecutive Gold Medal at the prestigious London showcase, following celebrated victories in both 2024 and 2025. Last year’s installation also earned the coveted Lawrence Medal, awarded to the best floral exhibit across all Royal Horticultural Society shows.

This year’s presentation feels especially emotional and timely. Inspired by the devastating wildfires that recently swept across parts of South Africa’s Cape region, Life After Fire explores the striking beauty of regeneration within the country’s fire-dependent fynbos ecosystem. Rather than focusing solely on destruction, the installation highlights what emerges afterward — resilience, renewal, and extraordinary biodiversity.

The exhibit combines indigenous South African flora including proteas, orchids, bulbs, wildflowers, and streamside plants growing through a dramatically charred landscape. Burnt protea branches twist into sculptural formations while tannin-rich water flows through the display, nourishing vibrant new growth below. The contrast between scorched textures and colorful regeneration creates a visual experience that feels cinematic, immersive, and deeply symbolic.

“The inspiration for this year’s display was the devastating wildfires which tore through several mountainous areas of the Cape this past season,” Kluge shared. “Fire plays a crucial role in the fynbos landscape and without it we simply would not have the incredible biodiversity we enjoy on our doorstep.”

The installation also serves as an educational moment, introducing global audiences to the ecological importance of South Africa’s fire-driven landscapes and the rare plant species that depend on them to survive.

Alongside his success at Chelsea, Kluge is currently collaborating with Hazendal Wine Estate to reimagine the estate’s historic gardens and create a new botanical passage dedicated to endangered renosterveld species within the Cape Floristic Region. The partnership reflects a broader commitment to biodiversity and regenerative practices across both landscape design and viticulture.

Under the direction of cellarmaster Kiara Scott Farmer, Hazendal is also transitioning toward regenerative and organic viticulture, with plans to achieve certified organic status by 2030.

With Life After Fire, Kluge continues to prove that floral exhibitions can move beyond decoration into something far more powerful — blending environmental storytelling, artistry, and cultural identity into an experience that lingers long after viewing it.
